Georgia's Natural Quality of Life
With 17 different Georgia State Parks scattered throughout northeast Georgia, natural choices abound. Anna Ruby Falls in Helen offers a non-strenuous walk through wild Mountain Laurel to a cascade that's so powerful it's almost deafening. The waterfalls at Tallulah Gorge, especially Terrora and Oceana, were once so loud they could be heard as far away as 5 miles. Those days return four times a year when Georgia Power Company opens the dams through the Gorge to allow certified kayakers to shoot the thundering rapids. By contrast, if you hike the loop trail around the top of Black Rock Mountain State Park which is less than 10 minutes from The Ridges of Rabun, you'll hear absolutely nothing but the wind moving through the thickets of poplar and spruce.
Rabun County is Georgia's lushest landscape, virtually drought-proof because of the abundant rain which keeps the Burton, Rabun and Seed Lakes full for boating and fishing year 'round... and the verdant plant life blooming in Georgia's endless mountain botanical garden. Northeast Georgia, too, is a golfer's tour of discovery, with 10 public and private courses scattered across the region.
